P5 Final 3 graphic design items for an original media product

Above you can see the final digital pack for a CD of Annie Udras. The upper one is a CD cover and the other one is inside part of the digital pack.

1. I have chosen the pictures which I found appropriate for my digital pack. I have increased their brightness and contrast, increased the exposure and gamma correction. For the middle one I have chosen Poster Edges filter in filter gallery and have changed some of the settings of this filter. For the left picture I have chosen the filter which is called Glass and for the left picture I have chosen Dry Brush.

2. On the sides of the CD I have put the name of the singer and I have chosen font style which looks like handwriting. I have added the names of the conga using different font style in the centre part as it's going to be a back side of CD. I have chosen black colour for this text.

 3. I have added some styles to the text such as drop shadow, inner shadow and outer glow. I have also decreased the fill opacity of this text. This has made the text to look very nice. I have also put the name of the album on the back side in a red colour and have changed the style of this text as well.

4. I have added the name of the singer and the James Bond's 'From Russia with Love' to the front side of the CD cover. I've made her name in big black letters to make it noticeable so people will see clearly whose album it is. I've made 'From Russia with Love' in smaller white letters as this is not that important as her name. This phrase focuses people's attention on the fact that Annie is Russian.

The next product is a T-shirt for funs of Annie which is going to be sold during her concert and later on it will appear on her website so everyone will be able to order it.

1. I have found the image of white woman's T-shirt in the Internet and downloaded it. I have removed the background with the Magic Wand Tool. Then I have chosen the picture which I was going to use on the front side of the T-shirt. I have cropped it and removed background first, and then I have increased the brightness, contrast, exposure and gamma correction. For this picture I have used a 'Glass' filter. Then I've changed the size of the picture so it was appropriate for the T-shirt and have put it in the centre of the T-shirt.

2. Then I have added some text using different font styles. The name of the singer I have placed above the image of Annie. I have made it in black capital letters. And the text 'From Russia with Love' I've made in different font style in black bold capital letters. I have put the flag of Russia behind this text and have changed the opacity of it.

3. After I have decided that the name of the singer should be in bold as well to be noticeable and also I have put an effect for the text so it is not straight like a line now. The signature of Annie I've made in red as usually in the font style which looks like handwriting. I have rotated it and decreased the opacity as I found that this looks more attractive.

This is the poster of Annie Udras which aims to promote her world tour 2015. I think it looks very nice and can attract people's attention. It has clear information about the cities which are included in this tour.

1. I have changed the exposure of the picture. I have increased exposure and offset and have reduced the gamma correction by a bit. Then I have made it in black and white and chosen photo filter which is called cooling filter (80) with density 8%. After this I have used smart sharpen for this image.

2. Then I have added text with different font styles. I have written World tour 2015 in big capital letters so everyone will notice it and pay attention. On the right side of the poster I have listed the names of the cities where the concerts are going to take place. I have used some effects for the text such as shadows and inner and outer glow. The opacity of the next I have reduced and the size of the letters is smaller than the words 'World tour 2015'.

3. Then I've added the signature of the singer which is looks like it is her handwriting. I have placed the signature on the guitar and have made it in the red colour so it matches 'World tour 2015', added some styles to this text, changed the opacity and rotated it.

Above you can see the digital pack for a CD with the picture of Annie and some texts which are made with different font styles.

Here is a concert ticket for Annie's concert in London. It has her picture so the customers will be attracted by the designs and will want to save the ticket. The ticket also includes the information about the place, date, time, raw, seat, price, the name of the singer, the name of her new album and her official website.

This is a t-shirt which will be sold during Annie's concerts. Funs are going to be really interested in purchasing this t-shirt as it has very nice picture of the singer, her name and the name of new album. It also has some splashes and butterflies. Later on the T-shirt is going to be available on Annie's official website.

Screen Printing

A form of printing in which a thick paste ink is forced through a stencil attached to a finely-woven mesh screen, transferring ink to the desired substrate in those areas not covered by the stencil. Screen printing, also known as screen process and serigraphy, is used to print almost any surface imaginable, from T-shirts and other textiles to posters to signs to tablecloths to shower curtains to leather goods.Screen printing is also a stencil method of print making in which a design is imposed on a screen of polyester or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance. Ink is forced into the mesh openings by the fill blade or squeegee and by wetting the substrate, transferred onto the printing surface during the squeegee stroke.

P4 (c) Legal and/or ethical issues

When we have decided to work on our graphic designs we had to consider about the legal and ethical issues which might have impact on our products. To be sure our products don't break the rules of ethics I've looked at the website of ASA (Advertising Standards authority).
ASA is the self-regulatory organisation (SRO) of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. The ASA is a non-statutory organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of advertising practice broadly reflects legislation in many instances. The ASA is not funded by the British government, but by a levy on the advertising industry.

Purpose: acting on complaints and proactively checking the media to take action against misleading, harmful or offensive advertisements.

The organisation's mission is to ensure that advertising in all media is legal, decent, honest and truthful, to the benefit of consumers, business and society.
It aims to achieve its mission by:
  • Making a success of regulating online ads
  • Being an effective part of the response to societal issues shown to be affected by advertising
  • Placing more emphasis on prevention rather than cure
  • Being more efficient and in tune with flow:

  • onsumers, business and society

If the organisation judges an ad to be in breach of the UK Advertising Codes, it must be withdrawn or amended and the advertiser must not use the approach again.

Advertising codes:

The UK Advertising Codes lay down rules for advertisers, agencies and media owners to follow. They include general rules that state advertising must be responsible, must not mislead, or offend and specific rules that cover advertising to children and ads for specific sectors like alcohol, gambling, motoring, health and financial products.

Our products are made for the sales promotion products. We have to be sure all the rules for the promoters are followed such as you can see below:

8.1
Promoters are responsible for all aspects and all stages of their promotions.

8.2
Promoters must conduct their promotions equitably, promptly and efficiently and be seen to deal fairly and honourably with participants and potential participants. Promoters must avoid causing unnecessary disappointment.

Protection of consumers, safety and suitability
8.3
Promoters must do everything reasonable to ensure that their promotions, including product samples, are safe and cause no harm to consumers or their property. Literature accompanying promotional items must give any necessary warnings and safety advice.

8.4
Alcoholic drinks must not feature in promotions directed at people under 18. Alcohol must not be available on promotion to anyone under 18.

8.5
Promotions must not be socially undesirable to the audience addressed by encouraging excessive consumption or irresponsible use.

Above there are just few examples of rules that have to be followed while promoting the products.

Copyright  - a way of protecting the physical expression of ideas. As soon as an idea is given physical form, e.g. a piece of writing, a photograph, music, a film, a web page, it is protected by copyright. There is no need for registration or to claim copyright in some way, protection is automatic at the point of creation. Both published and unpublished works are protected by copyright (http://www.staffs.ac.uk).

Copyright protection provides a vital incentive for the creation of many intellectual works. Without copyright protection, it would be easy for others to exploit these works without paying any royalties or remuneration to the owner of the work.

Copyright gives the rights to the creator:

1. to control the making copies

2. to control performing in public

3. to control the use on-line

4. to obtain an appropriate economic reward

Before starting the production process we have to consider the issues of representation. As we are going to use the pictures of our singer for the promotional aims we need an official contract with the singer who allows us to use her pictures in our graphic designs and to take the pictures of herself. Otherwise, there is a risk of being blamed in the future if our artist won't be satisfied with the use of her pictures anymore. Annie and her parent/guardian (as she is not 18) need to sign a Model Release Form. Since the moment we have a sign document, we can be sure that everything is legal and we are allowed to use the pictures of Annie in our graphic designs without having problems in the future.

P4 (b) Production Plan for 3 graphic design items

First, we had to decide on the dates and times of shooting process. We have discussed the possible options and made a shooting schedule which you can see below.

We have also included one more photoshoot which took place on the 20 th of April 2015.
Location: Photo Studio
Image: with the guitar, Russian coat and hat. White screen background.
Model: Annie Udras
Props: guitar, hat, Russian coat
Equipment: Canon 7D, portrait lenses and wide angle lens.

Production plan looks at different stages of how the product is going to be produced. In our case production plan helps us to plan the steps of producing 3 graphic design items.

- We have decided to organise a concert for our artist on the 5th of July in the O2 arena and, therefore, we need to produce concert tickets. Tickets have to be ready in a while before the concert. 18,000 concert tickets are needed as the capacity of O2 arena is 18,000 guests. In order to be able to sell all the tickets, they need to be ready as soon as possible.

My partner Maria and I have decided to divide all the tickets in the groups and to sell them on different steps before the concert. So first 5,000 tickets will be given for sale in 6 month before the concert, so the real fans of our artist will be able to get the tickets. We anticipated that these tickets will be almost sold and we have to produce and give for sale the biggest number of tickets (11,000) in 4 months before the concert. The rest of 2,000 tickets we have decided to sell when there is not much time left before the actual concert.

As we have agreed that the concert will be in July we are going to start selling our tickets in January. As our design for tickets is ready, we are able to start printing the tickets just one week before a start of selling. In January we will give a batch of 5,000 tickets. From February to May we are planning to sell 2,750 tickets each month and then in June 2,000 tickets. We have decided to start printing of the tickets on the 3rd of January and selling them on 10th January.

- We have also decided to produce a T-shirt as our second graphic design item. We have agreed to produce 6,000 T-shirts and to sell them only before the concert. We are planning to start production of T-shirts in June so we will make sure they are ready before the actual concert in July. Fans can be aware of the T-shirts by checking Annie's website where all the information is going to be presented. We believe that the T-shirts will be sold very quickly as fans always wish to buy a T-shirt on their favourite singer's concert.

- Maria and Me have chosen a CD digital pack as our third item for graphic designs. The number of copies of CDs is going to be 6,000. The CDs will be sold only at the concert and after it because otherwise less people will want to buy ticket to an actual concert. The limited amount of copies will be sold at the concert together with the T-shirts. To produce 6,000 copies of CDs more time is required, therefore, we have decided to produce them in advance 2 month earlier. People will be aware about the CD, the songs it contains and its price in a while before the concert as we are going to advertise it on the official website of our artist.

The launch date: 5th July 2015

I have decided to launch these products on the day of the concert. People will be able to buy new album of the singer before the concert so the real fans will be able to show that they are true fans. The new album will also be available for purchasing at the concert. Later on, the range of graphic designs for Annie Udras will be available on her official website and in music shops,

P4 (a) Budget Plan

Before the production of promotional products for the artist we had to be aware of how much would it cost. Therefore, we had to build up the budget plan in order to calculate the possible cost of producing the promotional items for Annie who is our chosen singer. Promotional items are really important for every artist as they help to make people aware of the artist, the concerts, also they attract people's attention and make people to be interested in the artist and this also leads to increased popularity and profit of the artist. However, the production of such items is expensive so we have to be sure that we are able to pay for producing them.

For our singer we have decided to organise the concert which is going to take place in O2 arena in London. The O2 arena is able to fit in 18,000 guests. This means we have to pay for 18,000 printed tickets. We had researched the prices for the standard ticket print. You can see them on the image below:

As we can see on the image above the price per one printed ticket is going to be £0.06. This means that for 18,000 printed tickets we need to pay £1,080 (18,000 x 0.06 = £1,080).

Our second promotional item is going to be a package for the CD. We have agreed with Maria to produce 6,000 CD copies for Annie. We have researched the price of producing full CD package and what we found out you can see on the image below:

As you can see  the base cost of producing 300 full colour cardboard sleeve (2 panel) is $217,00. The price of 6,000 is $4,340 that equals £2,852.13.

Our third product is a T-shirt. We have discussed with my partner Maria the quantity of T-shirts that we want to produce and have agreed at 6,000 T-Shirts per one concert. We have found out the approximate cost of producing a T-shirt which is $6.70 per one. Then we were able to calculate the cost of producing 6,000 T-shirts which is 6,000 x $6.70 = $40,200 which is equivalent to £26,430.

We have also to rent a studio for 1 day photoshoot which will cost us £450 per a day. The studio includes also the professional lighting equipment. We also have to hire a camera as we don't have our own one and the cost of renting a camera per a day will cost us £80 including lenses.  As we are doing our photoshoot in order to promote our artist we don't need to pay Annie for it, as it's in her interests to promote herself.

Final Grid.

Overall costs: The cost of production of 25 CD copies in Tesco costs 25 £. So the cost per 6000 copies is going to be £1920.  The price of printing 6000 CD covers will cost us £2852. So the overall cost of CD production is £4502

The cost of one T-shirt is £4.40. The overall cost of 6000 T-shirts is £26400.
The cost of one ticket is 60p. Therefore, 18000x0.06=£1080.
The cost of hiring studio and equipment is going to be £530.

Overall: £32512

Profit = Revenue - Costs

Profit = £1005000 - £32512 = £972488

P3 Designs for an original media product - presentation to target audience

We have created a questionnaire in order to find out what products our target audience would like to purchase and to chose what products we should design. We have also asked about different graphic designs to find out what colours, font styles do they prefer and which products they are likely to buy and how much money can they spend.

First of all, we have asked some general questions about the person who is answering our questions such as 'How old are you?', 'What is your gender?'. This is in order to see what age our target audience is going to be. Also we have included the questions about what products people are likely to buy and if they have a particular favourite artist.

The next questions considered the design of the product. This will help us to identify what products people like and what design of them they prefer.

Then we have also consider the price issues. We have asked how much people are likely to spend on the promotional items to be sure our price is not too high or too low.

Our responders include 7 females and 5 males. We have decided to ask a bit more girls because they represent our main target audience as they usually like at this age to listen to romantic songs about love and relationships. However, there are some boys who will be interested in Annie's graphic designs and who will visit her concerts, as she is a young beautiful girl and she can be attractive for boys.

The most part of responders are between 15 and 17 years old. We have asked more people of this age as they are mostly represent our target audience age as at this age teenagers fall in love for the first time and their mood is quite romantic.

This question was in order to find out if our candidates have a favourite band. 10 out of 12 do. This means they will be interested in promotional items with graphic designs. As we can see from the other question most people prefer to purchase T-shirt and Cd of their favourite artist, therefore, we have decided to produce a T-shirt with the image of Annie and a digit pack for a CD.

Many people prefer just plain white T-shirts so we might decide to produce white T-shirts. Also we found out that people are likely to save the tickets if they like its design. So we are going to make our tickets looking very nice so fans will definitely save them.

The most influential factors for people when they buy the promotional product are design, quality and image. Therefore, we will try to make our products according to our customer needs. Most candidates buy promotional items once or twice a year.

Most of the responders are ready to pay £20-75 for the promotional items of their favourite artist/band. This will help us to make a decisions on the price of the products.

Summary of the feedbacks

We have asked our focus group and some people who might represent our target audience to fill in our questionnaire and to answer our questions. First, we have shown them the presentation and the conceptual ideas of our products' designs. Most people have given us positive reaction as many of them have favourite artists and they like this kind of things. A lot of people prefer red and white colour of the T-shirt. We have decided to produce a white one because it is a common colour which will suit both males and females. Most people also said that an interesting graphic design of the ticket will attract them and they would definitely keep such ticket. From their responds we have found out that they would like the purple colour on the background of the ticket.

Overall. the idea was really demanded by the people we have asked. All of them were really happy to answer our questions and they were really interested in such products. Everyone said that the graphic design will attract them a lot and they will definitely buy promotional items with nice graphic designs.

Rational of the idea

Questionnaire responses and the opinions from our focused group have helped me and my partner Maria to make decisions on our products such as what products we are going to produce and how they are going to look like to meet the wishes of the target audience.

Most candidates prefer red and white colours so we have decided to make our T-shirt white as this colour suits everyone. On the T-shirt we will place a picture of Annie. her name and the name of her new single which is the same as the name of the whole album - 'Fly'. In order to avoid many empty spaces on the T-shirt we will put some splashes.

We have chosen a ticket as the second graphic design. Most of candidates have said that if the ticket looks attractive they will save it as a memory of the concert. Therefore, we are going to make an unusual ticket design with an image of Annie. As the focus group suggested we will make a purple background of the ticket. Date, time, place will be also written on the ticket.

Our last product will be a CD digit pack. We will make an interesting design so it will attract more people. CD cover will include the name of the artist and the name of the album and the pictures of Annie. On the back side of the CD pack we will place a list of songs included in the album.
